The Winners of 2017 Ukraine Local Final of CFA Institute Research Challenge - Teams of KNEU and ONU

On Friday, March 17, 2017 at President Hotel Kyiv CFA Society Ukraine announced teams of Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman (Team: Oleksandr Shevchuk, Mykyta Vikhrov, Andrii Kulyk, Kateryna Frolenko, Artem Omelchuk; Faculty Adviser: Olena Tsyrkun and Mentor: Anton Zhdanov) and Odessa National University named after I.I.Mechnikov (Team: Kristina Manchenko, Viktoriia Baloshenko, Dmytro Vinnik, Hennadii Bilyi, Olena Popova; Faculty Adviser: Natalia Bychkova and Mentor: Olga Teteruk, CFA) as winners of the Ukraine Local Final of 2016-2017 CFA Institute Research Challenge. The teams are now advanced to the EMEA Region where they will compete against universities from Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

This year more than 180 students in 39 teams from 33 leading University in 17 regions of Ukraine participated in the Research Challenge - most prestigious world-wide student competition in equity research. Each team had two months to write the real sell-side report with buy, sell or hold recommendation on Danone and 16 teams with the highest scores on the written research reports were announced as finalists of this season local competition. Among this year's finalists:

    • Kyiv School of Economics (Faculty Adviser: Olesia Verchenko)

    • Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Faculty Adviser: Alexander Mertens)

    • Lutsk National Technical University (Faculty Adviser: Yuriy Fesina)

    • Odessa National Economic University (Faculty Adviser: Olena Goncharenko)

    • Odessa National University named after I.I. Mechnikova (Faculty Adviser: Nataliya Bychkova)

    • Oles Honchar Dnipropetrovsk National University (Faculty Adviser: Nataly Krasnikova)

    • Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University (Faculty Adviser: Yuri Verlanov)

    • Sumy State University (Faculty Adviser: Oleksii Plastun)

    • Ternopil National Economic University (Faculty Adviser: Svitlana Vovk)

    • University of Customs and Finance (Faculty Adviser: Artem Kornetskyy)

    • University State Fiscal Service Ukraine (Faculty Adviser: Olga Pizhuk)

    • V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (Faculty Adviser: Nataly Grebenyuk)

The Final Round started with announcement of the teams that were advanced due to the combined score of written report and presentation scores based Semi-Final Round. The super finalists became:

    • Kyiv National Economics University

    • Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

    • Odessa National University

    • University State Fiscal Service Ukraine

Each university sent one or two team(s) of three-to-five students to participate in the local challenge. The Ukraine Local Final was the first step of two for a local team to advance towards the global final in Prague. The students from the Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman and Odessa National University named after I.I.Mechnikova will now travel to the Regional Final to be held in Prague, Czech Republic in April 2017, where they will match their wits, analytical skills and presentation abilities against other student teams from the Europe, Middle East, and Africa. The winners of the three Regionals (Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific) will then advance to compete in the Global Final.

Over 65 experienced investment professionals agreed to support the contest by volunteering as mentors, graders and judges sharing their expertise and knowledge with new generation of analysts. The pool of investment professionals include representatives from investment banks, consulting companies, international financial institutions, equity funds etc. The competition could not succeed without efforts of the volunteers, hence we would like to say exceptional thank you to all engaged investment professionals for their support and contribution!
