EMEA Regional Final of 2014 CFA Institute Research Challenge

On April 1-2 in Milan, Italy was held EMEA Regional Final of CFA Institute Research Challenge hosted by CFA Institute and CFA Society Italy at Melia Hotel. For the second time, Ukraine was presented by two teams advanced from Local competition. This year in the Regional Final participated teams from Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman and Kyiv School of Economics – the winners of Ukrainian Final.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is a global competition which tests the analytic, valuation, report writing, and presentation skills of university students. This year nearly 3,500 students from over 750 universities in 55 countries have participated and learned best practices in equity research from leading industry experts. This year 28 universities from all over Europe, Middle East and Africa competed for the chance to present Region during the Global competition in Singapore.

EMEA Regional Final started on April 1 with Kick-Off Meeting where Brian Stype,Director of CFA Institute Research Challenge, welcomed all participants and guests with inspiring speech and short instructions before the competition start. After the official opening Brian pass the word to Nitin Mehta, CFA, Managing Director of EMEA Region at CFA Institute, who emphasized on importance in ethical decision-making in investment profession and thank all the students for their motivated participation. Students had a great chance to receive experience from alumni of CFA Institute Research Challenge who arrived to Milan to support the participants during the EMEA Regional Final.

The semi-final round of regional competition started in the morning of April 2, 2014. 28 participating teams were divided into 5 rooms and based on the results of semi-final the best teams were advance to the Final. Finalists were determined by the combined scores of the students’ presentations (given that morning) and research reports (graded weeks in advance) and were announced at lunch. Among the five teams with the highest combined scores were:

    • Convinus University of Budapest (representing CFA Society Hungary)

    • Kyiv School of Economics (representing CFA Society Ukraine)

    • Politecnico Di Milano (representing CFA Society Italy)

    • University of Cape Town (representing CFA Society South Africa)

    • University of Lausanne (representing CFA Society Switzerland)

This year for the first time, the team from Ukraine was advanced to the Final stage on the Regional competition of the Challenge. Team of Kyiv School of Economics became one of the five best teams in EMEA Region. Please, find the presentation of KSE during the EMEA Regional Final here (starting from 59:01 min.).

Alexey Sobolev, CFA, Senior Analyst at Dragon Capital Asset Management, and Olesya Kulikova, CFA, Manager of Planning and Business Development at ContourGlobal kindly agreed to score the reports of EMEA Regional Final as nominated Graders by CFA Society Ukraine.This year the winner of the Regional Competition is team from Politecnico Di Milano (CFA Society Italy), who would represent EMEA Region on April 25 in Singapore during the Global Final.The Winning team was awarded by Nitin Mehta, CFA, Managing Director for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), who congratulated all finalists with the completion of the competition and invited all Universities to take part in the next season of CFA Institute Research Challenge.CFA Institute Research Challenge in Ukraine became the largest content in EMEA Region and number three in the world by number of participating teams this year.On behalf of CFA Society Ukraine, we would like to say thank you to all the participants of 2013-2014 CFA Institute Research Challenge in Ukraine!
